The Wobbit A Parody and Paul Erickson
About The Wobbit A Parody
I've written a parody of The Hobbit, entitled The Wobbit. It's the story of Bulbo Bunkins, a Wobbit from Wobbiton who is hired as a burglar (or more accurately a consultant) to join group of dwarves on an adventure. The dwarves are all former bankers: their bank failed when a dragon burned all their collateral, ate all their borrowers, and made their mountian-bank his lair. With the help of a project-managing wizard named Pantsoff, they go on a quest to kill the dragon, but a few things are forgotten. In my parody, just like in Tolkien's book, they set off with no swords, no plan to enter the bank, no strategy to kill the dragon, and no way to get the treasure home.
Plans For OpCon
The Wobbit is such a complete parody that I offer the Quality Parody Pledge: Not one scene, character, or song in The Hobbit is left out of The Wobbit A Parody. I will gladly challenge anyone at OpCon to a round of My Favorite Part, the game where you give me a scene from The Hobbit, and I read you the parody version of that scene from The Wobbit. If your favorite part isn't in my parody, you'll win a copy of the Kindle eBook Edition absolutely free. The Wobbit is also available in paperback at OpCon at a very reasonable price.
When you stop by my table to purchase The Wobbit, don't forget to preview my newest parody, The Superfriends Of The Ring, the first part of my parody trilogy, The Chairman Of The Board Of The Rings. It continues the story of Bulbo and his increasingly uncanny Ring. Superfriends will be available this summer from Amazon in paperback and as an eBook, just as The Wobbit is now. The Wobbit is also available in a paperback German translation from Munich publisher Piper Verlag. They will be publishing the translated Superfriends this October. I plan to do readings from both books at OpCon, where I will be fully costumed as Bulbo Bunkins.
Author Biography
In 1975, when I was an Oak Park & River Forest High School student, playing Dungeons & Dragons in the basement of his parents' house, I never dreamed I would become a published fantasy author. But 37 years later, I've written a published, full-scale parody of The Hobbit.
My interest in Middle-earth began in the seventh grade at Horace Mann school when my class read the The Hobbit. That summer I read the parody classic Bored Of The Rings, mostly because it was shorter than any of Tolkien's actual books. It wasn't until I lost my job in 2008 that I truly became part of the Tolkien craze. To keep from getting depressed while looking for work, I started writing a parody of The Hobbit, just for fun. It's almost like I've joined the Oak Park tradition of fantasy writing, starting with Edgar Rice Burroughs and his Mars books.
